John's Pocket Shirts

A coupla years ago, John wanted all his shirts to have pockets. He liked to carry around a small notebook where he could write things he wanted to remember.

Even though he no longer carries a notebook -- he still likes having pockets...

He has about a dozen "fancy pocket" shirts.

At first, I used to go to great pains to use matching fabric to make the pockets. For example, I'd cut the sleeves off a long sleeve shirt to make pockets...turning it into a short sleeve shirt....Which was fine.

But, that was BORING.  So, after only two or three of those basic shirts -- I started to make pockets that were quite the opposite of matchy-matchy

THIS became John's new style.
The most important element to this project is an iron and some hem tape.
Basically, I made a fabric pocket, and lined it with some white fabric...then, I sewed 3 sides together and left the bottom open.  I just folded the bottom up...and ironed it in place before stitching it down.
The finished pocket had a white edge, because of the way I folded it over.
I made the pockets out of some very small pieces of fabric.
This finished pocket was pretty jazzy...but I decided to take the path of least resistance...and just put ONE POCKET on this shirt.

  1. My husband has always wanted pockets on his shirts, and will rarely wear one that doesn't have pockets! I, however, don't add pockets; I just shop for shirts that already have them!! LOL A few years back Penney's came out with regular "plain" t-shirts but each one had one pocket. I think he must have at least two dozen of them (in assorted colors) by now!!

I love the pockets you've added to John's shirts, though. Hm, I wonder if Ron would like that look....
