Post-Holiday Doldrums

Call it whatever you want...the post-holiday blues; the after-Christmas malaise; the winter doldrums...if you live in Iowa -- it's a real thing....

And our answer? Well -- the smart people LEAVE TOWN.

That phenomenon has an actual name: SNOW BIRDS.

At our first get-together AFTER New Year's...the TMBC was discussing this phenomenon...

Hey -- it isn't anything new. WE ARE IOWANS. PROUD TO BE BORN AND RAISED HERE. We accept this State for all the good things it offers.

And then, we choose to stay for the winter...

Well, some of us do....Ugh...

Iowa can be pretty bleak...it's not just the cold...the trees are bare, the sky is gray...the days are short...

So, we decided we needed to PEP UP THIS PARTY!!

This year, in January -- the TMBC will do a WIT. (Tuesday Morning Breakfast Club does a Winter Iowa Tour).

We have many interesting little cities in the Eastern part of Iowa. Our WIT criteria is simple.  The destination should be within a 90 minute radius.  It should have a museum, maybe a renovated mansion, a historical society, or an art gallery...I'll bet those places would LOVE TO HAVE us visit them during this blah month of January....

One more thing -- oh, yeah -- a fabulous restaurant where we can have a special lunch.

Oh, yeah. THIS IS GONNA BE FUN.

Here area few of our possibilities...

Brucemoor is a beautifully restored mansion in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Just one hour up the river -- Dubuque has a new Mississippi Museum.
One hour DOWN the river is Muscatine, Iowa. Their Art Museum used to be the Musser Mansion-- and, unbelievably, I've NEVER been there!! (oh, yeah, a giant Salvation Army thrift store, too)...and a FIRST CLASS Italian Restaurant.

Oh, yeah -- WE'VE GOT SOME WINTER GAMES UP OUR SLEEVES, PEOPLE....The very best part of winter is that it makes you SOOO APPRECIATIVE of Spring, right??

We'll get through it...with a little help from our friends...

AND MARY IS COMING for her annual winter visit.  We'll be helping her work on a top-secret project (which I can hardly wait to tell you about!)

  1. What a cool club! And tour! What a great idea to "tour" nearby cities! That's super cool. I live in Western NC and ever since the time changed, the winter blah's are here too. Spring is on the way though. And you're right - winter does make us all appreciate Spring (and lots of day light) a little more. :-) That's a really cool picture of y'all's club! Enjoy your day!
