Lilly's Birthday

I'm not sure when, exactly, I realized Lilly loved steak -- but she was young. Maybe three years old -- when most kids that age are chowing down on macaroni and cheese.

I think she was four years old when she got her very own Porterhouse steak for her birthday.

This year, Lilly turned 12 years old.  YIKES. Where does the time go, people?? The first order of business is Lilly's Steak and Cake Birthday dinner...

Lilly decorated her own birthday cake.
Of course, the peanut butter icing is the MAIN EVENT...
The menu was:  filet Mignon, smashed potatoes, salad, garlic bread and cake.
North Scott Foods had their whole beef tenderloins on sale for $5.99/lb.  So, for only $27, I cut 11 Filet Mignon...BOTH Lilly and Warren like their steak RARE.

The steaks were wonderful -- but the big hit of the dinner was the smashed potatoes!! I par-boiled 5 pounds of Yukon gold potatoes in the morning. When the kids got off the bus, I had Lilly put a stick of melted butter on a cookie sheet...then she smashed the potatoes....flipped them (so both sides were properly buttered)...and cooked the whole show in a hot oven for 30 minutes. Then, we flipped them -- did another 30 minutes. Until everything was brown and crispy. The last touch of deliciousness was a bag of grated Mexican cheese. (of course you could also sprinkle on bacon, green onions, etc.).

We ran out of potatoes!!
