Painting Rocks

First of all -- painting rocks was not my original idea...
I had the library pass to the Putnam Museum, so we met Uncle Ross there....
The Putnam is a wonderful science museum...and it's very interactive.
On our way out of the building that day -- Warren found this painted rock. It was just on the ground, with a lot of other river rock...
Both kids were thrilled with this discovery! So -- of course -- I decided it would be a wonderful project for us to do ourselves. We could paint some rocks!!
It's still too cold to go out on the porch -- so I laid a tarp down in the living room -- moved the puzzle table to the middle of the tarp...and covered it with an old tablecloth.
Finding suitable rocks was no problem...
And I have dozens of bottles of paint...maybe some fingernail polish, too...
Some foam egg cartons to put their paint in...several cups of water...and a roll of paper towels...
Lilly decided all her rocks should begin with a white coat of paint.
Warren got right to the red paint part...
We do a lot of art projects -- and some turn out better than others. OF COURSE. But this project was a real winner -- from beginning to end....

  1. Every town out here has it's own painted rocks facebook group. It's a crazy, creative, fun phenomenon. As so many of our parks are actually wooded trails, people get creative with the hiding. One guy is legendary for hiding a gold Seahawks rock. He gives clues over several days, as to where it might be on the many miles of trails. He also has a painted rock trading post at his business.
