LAUNDRY TREASURE..!!

Every time I do a deep dive into my basement clutter, I always discover (or, REdiscover) some fabulous treasure.

Take this little booklet, for example. Published by the Westinghouse Home Economics Institute of Mansfield, Ohio....in 1944....I cannot tell you how much joy this brought me.  When I bought it the first time -- and then again, when I found it the other day.

I LOVED EVERY PAGE.  Although, much of it is  irrelevant in today's world...

But I loved reading it, and thinking about my Mom. When she was raising six kids, Monday was DEFINITELY "Wash Day"....Dad set up the wringer washer on the side porch, and we cranked the wringer for her...the whites first, then the colored clothes...and work clothes last

The title is, "Home Laundering Guide for clothes and Fabrics"
50 pages, with photographs, illustrations, tables, graphs...
In this book, the word "Laundromat" refers to that new Westinghouse invention -- the automatic washing machine
It seems like Westinghouse was trying to add a new word to the English language.  It is interesting that the word "Laundromat" has survived...but it doesn't mean "an automatic washing machine"...
The last page of this fabulous little book of tips and tricks says:

The Laundromat makes possible these added benefits:
  • No more "washday" in your week. Wash any time, whenever you get a load.  Laundromat makes it an "Odd moments" job -- with little time and no hard work involved.
  • Easier ironing, less mending. No stubborn wringer wrinkles to make ironing more work. No torn off buttons or broken fasteners.
Tomorrow, I'm going to put this in context...and it's surprising...

  1. Love this book and all its photos, may need to borrow for a more thorough read. Seeing the Laundromat I recalled seeing it at the neighbors house, while the rest of the women in the neighborhood had the traditional wringer washers. Had no idea how modern and cutting edge her Laundromat truly was.

  3. This brought back a memory of my grandmother's wringer washer and electric washing machine side by side in her very large laundry room. It also brought back wonderful "grandma" memories. Your booklet is a treasure!
