The Freedom Rock

My sister Deb sent me this story, via email -- and I goofed up when I posted it the first time. But it was so inspiring, I decided it was worth the EFFORT to do it right...so here goes -- AGAIN...

**********
There is a huge rock near a gravel pit on Hwy 25 in rural Iowa. For generations, kids have painted slogans, names, and obscenities on this rock, changing its character many times. A few months back, the rock received its latest paint job, and since then it has been left completely undisturbed.

It's quite an impressive sight. Be sure to scroll down and check out the multiple photos (all angles) of the rock.

I thought the flag was draped over the rock, but it's not. It is actually painted on the rock...

Here's the artist: Ray ' Bubba ' Sorensen.

Since I posted this entry, I've received several emails telling me that the artist, Ray Sorensen, was a 19-year old Iowa State student when he painted this rock for the first time -- in 1999 -- as a tribute to America's veterans. Every year since then, on Memorial Day, he paints the rock white and starts all over again -- with an entirely new mural -- always dedicated to veterans.

I believe these pictures are from the 2003 Freedom Rock. To see all 12 years of Freedom Rock murals -- visit Ray's website: The Freedom Rock
