Maid Rite Restaurants

In keeping with this week's "food" theme  -- John and I had pretty much stopped going to restaurants.  But, thanks to Depends (TMI -?- sorry...) -- I hoped we could add restaurant outings back into our weekly routine. Nothing fancy or complicated....but I wanted a step up from the Burger King drive-thru...

Maid-Rite is a small midwestern chain of basic 50's style diners.  The decor is fun, the food is simple and delicious.  Here's the link to their "locations". I hope you have one near you...

According to their website, Maid-Rite started in Muscatine, Iowa. They proudly display their history as wall art:

In 1926, way back before Facebook, and even before TV, people just didn't know how to waste time. But, being really bored paid off for butcher Fred Angell. He worked to get just the right combination of a special cut and grind of meat and a selected blend of spices. When a deliveryman tasted Fred's new creation, he said, "This sandwich is made right." With that, the Maid-Rite was born. Fred was quite a sandwich maker but not much of a speller. Our select line of seasoned loose meat sandwiches are made from 100% USDA Midwestern fresh ground beef served on a fresh steamed white or wheat bun, with your choice of ketchup, mustard, onion and pickles.

With a 50's 60's vibe -- black and white checkered floors and a soundtrack of classic Rock 'N Roll music...

It was a pleasure to be allowed to go inside a restaurant and sit in a booth. (separated by plastic shower curtains).  Their malts are served the old-fashioned way!! (with a side-car)

The decor is ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC...

There are so many things I loved about eating at this unpretentious diner...for starters, the $3.99 hamburger with fries!

But the best thing was that the music made John smile...so I'm definitely putting this place into the rotation...

  1. Glad you are able to dine out again! We have an almost identical restaurant chain here called Johnny Rockets. The closest one to us is about 20 minutes north in Auburn.
