Civilian Conservation Corps

In 1934, John's father was a young man living with his parents in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. His parents were recent Italian immigrants, and, with the whole country in the grip of the Great Depression, there were no jobs and very little food. John's father -- and two of his brothers -- went to live in the CCC camps.

If you never heard of the CCC camps, don't feel bad.  It's a part of history that has been nearly lost...but, of course, THANKS TO MY LIBRARY -- we learned a lot about it several weeks ago.

There is a great website --  Civilian Conservation Corps.
Linda Betsinger McCann writes books about Iowa History.
My book club was very interested in this topic.
We decided to allow our husbands to attend!!
Warren is not exactly into history yet...
I never realized the impact of the CCC camps in Iowa
I had to take several play breaks with Warren
Guess who else came with us that day?

  1. I've always been fascinated by the CCC. Many of the parks and bridges in Washington State benefitted from the CCC and the buildings and railings that remain are beautiful and distinctive. We are privileged to have a small, but informative CCC museum in one of the parks just north of us. On a lucky day, it will be staffed by a now elderly, but still proud CCC veteran who adds their own stories to the wonderful displays.
