My New Sewing Room

Dear Laura,

Hey -- you asked a good question yesterday!! Which room will be my new sewing room -- the den or the secondary bedroom?

I've decided my sewing room will be the MASTER BEDROOM. That's right. The biggest room in the place -- the one with the best windows and the walk-in closet!!

 https://www.vintagecooperatives.com/bettendorf/locust

Here's my logic.

John has Alzheimer's -- and it's only going to get worse. That's why we're moving. He will spend more and more time in bed -- and the secondary bedroom will be a much quieter space, because on the other side of it's common wall is the stairwell. Also, that room is almost the exact same size as our current bedroom -- and the bathroom configuration is the same. I liked this floor plan because the bedroom/bathroom layout will be familiar for John.

Also -- the television will be on the wall shared by the Master Bedroom...and if John was in that room, my late-night tv watching would annoy him.

But that big beautiful well-lit room won't be just for me and my sewing.  It will have a double bed -- and, hopefully, an art table for Lilly and Warren.  It's where the kids and I can hang out, play games and make stuff...without disturbing John.  I am excited about having a walk-in closet to organize my fabric stash and Grandma Camp activities/art supplies...because, even though we'll be living in a new place, and the kids are getting older...I like to think Grandma Camp has a few more seasons...

Auction Pictures

I am still having trouble posting pictures from my phone onto the Art of Homemaking Auctio page on Facebook. But it's easy for me to get pictures onto this blog...so I'm using this as a holding pattern...until I get some better skills...

There were nine totes of vintage linens...

Each tote was organized and marked.

Plus, some colorful rugs...and boxes of books, games, puzzles...

Downsizing

Janet just asked me what all this talk was about downsizing...and where we were moving to.  I blogged about this some time ago -- but hey -- she must not read this blog every day, eh?

When the building is complete (maybe in November) -- John and I will be moving into the Bettendorf Suites, a Ewing Property development.  It is a co-operative community with 64 units...two elevators, underground parking, a fitness room, a community room,  etc.

This is a rendering of what the finished building will look like.

The floor plan I selected is "The Locust". It's 1400 sq. ft., on the first floor -- with a patio and direct entrance to the outside. That was a deal-breaker for me. I wanted to be sure Lilly and Warren would be able to come directly into our home (I bought it during Covid lock-down)....and, of course, it will make it much easier to take Frankie out for his necessary walks.

Here's a link to our floor plan: The Locust

There are a million reasons for us to move into town.  Most of them center around John's Alzheimer's, of course.  He can no longer take care of this place -- and the horse weeds are officially 10 ft. tall now  As they have been for the last coupla years.

But it was while shoveling snow last winter, and scraping ice off my car when I knew for sure IT'S TIME TO MOVE.  On one particularly bitter cold day, I'd been outside for two hours and it suddenly hit me -- "what happens if I slip and fall?  Hey -- I'm 72 years old -- I could have a heart attack doing this?"

Really...I could lay there for two days before anybody knew I was down for the count...

My friends Linda and Don had already become shareholders in this property -- so they'd done a lot of the research.  I love the location, and the concept of "aging in place".  I am looking forward to the walk-in shower, having everything on one level, and gaining a community.

They have a shareholders meeting once a month, so you get to make friends with your new neighbors.   John went with me to the last meeting.  He enjoys visiting with people, and I think he had a nice time.  Ross came, too, so he could see what it was all about and meet some of the people who will be our neighbors.

Right now, John is having a wonderful summer here at the house.  But he has absolutely no idea how much work my brother Calvin does for him.  Cal comes down almost every day with his chain saws, stump grinders, bush wackers, etc.  Cal's work has made it possible for John to ride his John Deere riding mower for hours on end.

I've been working for months to get rid of things we no longer need...and have taken tons (literally) of stuff to the Goodwill or the Salvation Army.  I've cleaned out our bedroom, and most of the closets in the house.  Then, I started on the basement...and, as you know, will be having the first auction -- which is mostly about my vintage linen collection.  But it's also a lot of stuff from Grandma Camp, kid stuff, a giant kite (I thought that was SUCH a good idea -- but nobody ever wanted to fly the damn thing)....kitchen stuff, my two clock collections, various lamps, an upright freezer...well, you'll see it all soon enough.

Dosland Auction picked up the stuff for my FIRST auction last weekend.  They sell everything online -- and post a new sale every 10 days or so.  They will photograph every single thing, and let me know when my auction will be happening.  I expect it won't be until September...(he has a lot of other people in the line-up.)

AFTER we move into town -- there will definitely be a second auction.  That will be most of the MAN STUFF that John has accumulated over the years.  I can't begin to tell you -- chain saws, blowers, weed eaters, butchering equipment, fishing, bow-hunting,  gardening, sooo many pairs of winter boots, hunting boots, waders, rubber boots, two closets full of camouflage clothes, etc.

And, like I said, I am just grateful I'm able to DO THIS WORK.  Or, to be more specific -- HIRE the right people to do the work...

Cuz, after we move to our new home, and Dosland Auction does the second sale -- I'm bringing back the GOT JUNK boys to finish the job!!

By that time I'm ready to put this place on the market -- I figure it will officially be two years since I started this downsizing process...

Yes.  It's a lot.  But I feel like I'm in a marathon, not a sprint...

The surprising thing is I'm not hating this process.  I have actually enjoyed seeing all my treasures...and am looking forward to sending them back out in the world, to be discovered by somebody else who will appreciate them as much as I did.

And...as we get older -- I want to be in a home where everything is on one floor.  I'm excited about being 5 minutes away from the YMCA...having underground parking and a walk-in shower...and simply walking down the hall for our monthly Featherweight sew-ins....

Yes -- I'm a LUCKY GIRL...

My Friend Becky

My college friend, Becky -- lives in the Chicago area. We try to get together a couple times a year -- usually in a small Illinois town -- which is a 90 minute drive for each of us. This year, Becky offered to drive THE WHOLE DISTANCE...so on Tuesday, she arrived in time for breakfast with the TMBC.  Sandy, Linda K., and her mother (my Aunt Adda)...met us at Brother's...one of John's favorite go-to places for his beloved blueberry pancake.  It's about 15 minutes from my house.

THANKS FOR coming the whole distance, Becky.

Then -- she and I went to LeClaire, Iowa -- home of THE AMERICAN PICKERS..!!

Our first selfie of the day -- Becky with her new set of vintage pillowcases.
Port Byron, Illinois (where we ate breakfast) has this giant bicycle guy in their park...
We tried to do a selfie, with him in the background -- but only got his shoe...
Then, we figured out we had to step away from the giant man...
We went to see the Home of the Pickers..
Becky had to buy a t-shirt for her husband, who is a fan of the show.

We ended up spending our last hour on a bench overlooking the Mississippi River....talking about anything and everything and nothing in particular.

Becky has known me for over 50 years...and even when it's been a very long time since we've seen each other -- the minute we get into the same room, it's like no time has passed at all.

Oh, yes...I'm a lucky, lucky girl.

LETTING IT GO...

No matter what you love -- the truth is -- nobody gets buried with their coin collection.

Sooner or later -- we ALL have to let go of our lifetime collections. My observation of the world we live in is that most people wait too long.... I am a lucky girl to be doing this job WHILE I'M STILL ABLE.

Surprisingly, saying goodbye to my treasures hasn't been sad for me. I loved collecting these things, and I was fortunate to be able to assemble many of them last year for the Art of Homemaking Exhibit at the Bettendorf Library.

For me, the joy was always THE HUNT. I loved, loved, loved every auction I attended or antique store I discovered over the years. But, at this point in my life, I am done with owning all this stuff...and it's TIME TO LET IT GO...

But -- WOW -- was I an excellent hunter!!

I will be selling three clothespin bags...

Apparently, these used to be a form of advertising...

I'm letting go of my Missoni plastic dishes (designed for Target) -- AND also, a Missoni suitcase.

This 3-D pansy embroidered pillowcase goes with a decorated flat sheet...which is in perfect condition.  But I HAD to launder the pillowcases. (and, of course, hang them outside)...

This is a box of colored metal sewing machine accessories -- copper colored sewing feet!!  Even a turquoise attachment!!

It was called "Kenmore Sew-By-Color"

You know all about my love affair with #158 Kenmore sewing machines

Turns out, I also couldn't resist boxes of cams and attachments...

Obviously, I didn't try too hard to resist anything! This summer, as I was measuring and marking each and every piece of linen in my massive collection -- I felt like it all came to me exactly as it was supposed to...and now it's time for me -- AND these linens -- to move on to our next chapter.

Yes. A Ukulele Concert...this is happening...

Of course, this blog has become ALL ABOUT the TREASURES that will be sold at the Art of Homemaking Auction. But that isn't the only thing that's happening! Yesterday, my friend Linda P. texted this message, "if you're looking for something to do today, there's a ukulele concert at the bandshell at 11:30..."

Seriously. Did she really say A ukulele concert?

John was having a restless morning...we are in the middle of a heat wave and he insists on riding his mower in the hay field...for hours....

So, I decided a ukulele concert was JUST THE THING...!!

Who knew there were that many people in the State of Iowa who could play the ukulele?
I thought they were amazing....and they played ALL THE MUSIC FROM THE 60's...Chuck Barry, Linda Ronstadt, the Beach Boys...It was like I knew every word!!
THANKS, Linda, for the great entertainment idea!!

John didn't want to go....but, as he was visiting with Don, and listening to familiar music, his mood improved. For myself, sitting there -- just a few blocks away from our new home -- I had this peaceful, contented feeling.

We're going to be okay.

Now -- I'M GONNA try to post a video...

The Auction PICK UP

Well -- the pick-up could not have gone better!!

Although, it was the hottest day of the year -- a legit 99 degrees -- with a heat index of over 100.  YIKES.

I never know what John will obsess about...and he definitely is NOT happy when I talk about us moving.  I took him up to Cal and Jeanne's house so he wouldn't have to witness the exodus...

The Dosland Auction team arrived right on time -- 1:00 Saturday afternoon.  It was four guys,  a big truck, and a 14' trailer,

They had to finegal (probably not a word) to get that big rig close to the basement door.

We did a little walk-around the basement to see what they needed to pack -- then, the four of them just started HAULING OUT STUFF...

They were EXPERT packers...

They had lots of moving quilts to wrap breakables in

They unearthed a plastic Santa sleigh I didn't even know we had...along with a quilt rack, a dehydrator, a Carom board and a Cattail floor lamp...(wait til you see it!)

The linen totes were the last thing to go on the truck.
It must have been 120 degrees inside that trailer...
After one hour, they had EVERYTHING loaded that I intended for the Art of Homemaking Auction.  But -- hey -- look at all that extra space!!
The boys went upstairs and began to empty out the guest bedroom.  They loaded up a dresser, rocking chair, art table, side tables, some lamps...well, you get the idea.

The Singer Featherweight

So, okay -- I'm NOT selling one of my Singer Featherweights.

But -- hey -- my sister Deena IS. (She has FIVE of them!!)

She fell in love with my Featherweight during our ONE AND ONLY Sisters-Sewing-Weekend in 2016. THANK GOD we did that when we did...because at this point, none of us would be able to get away for FOUR DAYS IN A ROW. We enjoyed every minute...

So -- the Featherweight being sold at the auction is Serial Number AL 166806 -- which means she was manufactured in Elizabethport, New Jersey in December 1952.

And she's a Beauty...

The gold decals are in perfect condition.
It has a new LED bulb...
It's original case and foot pedal, in perfect condition...
No iron rot on the bottom...clean as a whistle...(that happened to my friend Sandy)
Of course, the original bobbin case (my cousin bought a machine online and it came with NO bobbin case...)

Deena never got around to naming this one...so that will be up to you. Because she was born in 1952, (the Featherweight, not Deena) she has the seam markings on the needle plate. I'll try to take more pictures before she gets on the truck later today...
