The Best Grandmas

Many of my friends are Grandmothers now. Most of us don't know how it happened -- because we NEVER thought we'd be this old. But -- there you have it.

GRANDMOTHERS....

But, truly -- it's the best job I ever had.  My generation is doing a helluva good job, and our grandchildren are SO LUCKY to have us....

Marion has taken her granddaughters to New York City. I can HARDLY WAIT...

Phyllis writes letters to her grandchildren...Patsy teaches hers how to garden and can. They BOTH share their love of sewing.

My Ya Ya Sisters are long distance Grandmas. They SENDS things, Sandy is famous for her homemade cards, Linda ALSO took her granddaughter to New York City (apparently, THAT is my standard for good-grandma-moment, eh?)...

Kathy's home has always been that soft place for her grandchildren....(and, as it turned, out, for ROSS as well)

My sister-Grandmas. Ronda had ALL her grandkids every single Monday (her only day off) for years. It was a mayhem they will never forget. Deena has a family dinner EVERY Wednesday night...now with eight grandchildren (the oldest is 6), they love the COUSIN CHAOS...

Deb took her granddaughters to New York City (yes, I know it's a recurring theme) -- and she also MAKES THEM fabulous quilts, embroiders their curtains, jackets, clothes....

Sue spent two years of her life remodeling her family's farmhouse so when her grandchildren visit, they can sleep in the upside-down room, go sledding and have the childhood memories SHE had growing up.

Pat and Violet are both Grandmas that go that extra mile. Pat has 4-year old Harper at her house once a week, they paint together, and then she hangs the art on a long hallway wall....Violet has a namesake grandchild, Violet...and of course, she provides ALL THE VIOLET clothes a child could wish for...

Here's what I really, really believe. We did the best we could while raising our children. But when you know better, you do better. And, if you're doing it right -- when you get older -- YOU KNOW BETTER. The time we spend with these precious grandchildren is what will be remembered....it's how you make a difference in this world.

Grandmothers are supposed to do the things parents don't have time for. And I don't think the job of Grandmother has EVER been as important as it is today.  Because the young parents are so busy.  Both Mom and Dad are working, and they have tons of after-school activities, not to mention all that important non-stop texting on their cellphones...

I'm just saying...the Grandmothers I know take the time to roll out canned biscuits to look like dinosaurs. They cook with their grandchildren, then set the table, and eat the meal sitting AT that table and having conversation. Pat took Harper on her first city bus ride, Judy does jigsaw puzzles in the middle of the night when Morgan can't go to sleep...
