My Magical Yellow Quilt

I am not a quilter. And if it hasn't happened to me by now -- it probably isn't going to.  But that doesn't mean I don't appreciate a beautiful quilt when I see one.
Quilt Expo in Madison, Wisconsin...the first weekend in September. A STUNNING quilt show...

And some quilts have been warm and fuzzy friends in my life.  The corduroy lap quilt Grandma Dodds gave me when I went away to college still lives in a bag on the top shelf of my closet...

For 20 years, this lightweight yellow quilt was a daily part of my family life. It's probably from the 30's or 40's.  The background is butter yellow -- and each block is different calicos. If one of my boys was sick, or sad, they would lay on the sofa, and I'd cover them with this quilt -- like it had some kind of magical powers...

But, alas, the quilt is WORN OUT.  It's been folded up and unused for the last ten years...

The outside edges were completely worn away...there really was NO binding left...
I look at this tattered quilt, and I see nine year old Elliott, falling asleep on the sofa after an exhausting day of riding his bike all over the neighborhood and helping his Grandpa mow grass. I knew I should wake him up -- or he wouldn't sleep well that night. (Sleep has always been an issue). But instead, I'd cover him up with the yellow quilt...
One square was beyond repair....the fabric was totally GONE...
This quilt was always about peace and comfort....and it isn't doing anybody any good folded in a drawer...

I'm going to try to fix it.....I think I can do it....

I'm going to start with a dig on T-shirt mountain....

Lilly's First Selfie

My young friend Anne gave Lillian a digital camera. THANKS AGAIN, ANNE. You are the best. I am embarrassed to admit HOW LONG IT TOOK ME to actually figure it out -- put in a memory card, etc.

Of course, Lillian LOVES taking pictures. At first -- it seemed like she was going to have my photography skills....
Kind of blurry...but then, maybe that's what she was going for??
This is an extreme close-up of the nativity under the Christmas tree...
Her perspective is so much lower than an adult view....
Getting better...Mary was always very photogenic...

Her first attempt at a selfie...
NOW she's getting the hang of it, eh?
She wanted me to take a picture of her favorite outfit.  On this day, anyway...We cut off the hood (which she hated) -- and reused the fur trim to make a new neckline.
YES -- WE CAN SEW!!

Seams Unlikely

If you love to sew -- you are most likely a fan of Nancy Zieman. Her PBS series, "Sewing with Nancy" is the longest running program on North American television. Thanks to her, millions of people learned how to sew -- or improved or advanced their sewing techniques.

I think Nancy's natural curiosity is why she is such a success story. She has always been interested in what new notion or machine or technique might improve her end result. Nancy embraced new technology, and was on the edge with computer sewing machines, then digital embroidery -- whatever was new or inventive. She was eager and delighted to learn something new...and then, of course -- share with US -- her viewers.

The quilt hanging on the wall is one of Nancy's originals. She is a passionate landscape quilter...

We all know how to Google. But, once again, with her natural curiosity, Nancy went one step further -- learning about Google analytics. Of course, she went into the analytics to see WHY people were googling her name. She discovered thousands of hits like "Nancy Zieman's stroke"...or Nancy Zieman's face. So, with a little encouragement from her friends, Nancy decided she would write a different kind of book.

Nancy Zieman is a successful author and a gifted writer. But her autobiography. "Seams Unlikely" is a huge departure from her usual "how-to" sewing books. She takes the reader behind the scenes of her life -- starting with her childhood, growing up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin, Bell's Palsy at the age of three, being a traveling teacher, and building a multi-million dollar company...
Some early reader reviews of Seams Unlikely:

Here is your window to the world of PBS star, Nancy Zieman: Her struggles, her strategies, her heartaches, her triumphs. Beyond Nancy’s television fame, you will discover a real person who refused to be limited by facial paralysis, chronic pain, or financial and business challenges. Woven through each page is Nancy’s constancy— and inspiring message: “If I can do it, so can you.” Read it and believe.
Gail Brown Author, columnist and frequent Sewing With Nancy guest

My first mistake in reading this book was starting it late at night – I couldn’t put it down and had an early flight the next day. My second mistake was in reading it on the plane where I uttered sympathetic groans, shed crocodile tears and let a few peals of laughter rip from my lungs in the company of a plane full of strangers. My third mistake was in assuming I knew everything about Nancy Zieman. Her success has been built on true grit, honesty and control of her destiny. She is the American success story.
Eileen Roche Editor, Designs in Machine Embroidery magazine

I loved reading Seams Unlikely. Nancy wrote her autobiography the same way she does everything -- with a graceful, classy confidence, and a lot of unexpected humor. After reading Nancy's story, I am even more impressed with who Nancy Zieman is and what she has accomplished in her life. I laughed, I cried, and I learned something new. At the end of the day, that's always been the thing that drives Nancy Zieman. She is, first and foremost -- an inspiring teacher.

To find out more about the book -- which is a great read and a WONDERFUL GIFT -- go to the Seams Unlikely website.  If  you're going to be in Madison, Wisconsin -- there is a special book signing on February 15th.  AND the book will be officially launched at Sew Expo in Puyallup at the end of the month.

2013 Christmas Dress

Christmas 2013 is now just a memory. We had a wonderful time here in Iowa...no doubt about it. I started a new tradition for myself -- a Christmas dress. Although I made one last year, it's not a tradition until you do it two years in a row...

And it is SO MUCH FUN to have a unique CHRISTMAS dress to wear to special occasions. This one started off as a wacky tacky t-shirt, then I added a long velvet (mostly) skirt. You know how much I enjoy the ying and the yang of life...

When I was looking for pictures of the dress, I realized I had a LOT of special holiday events!!
The morning of Lillian's first dance recital, I wore my Christmas dress (the girls loved it!). I took Memphis and Lilly out for breakfast. We were headed back to my house so they could get dressed up for their Nutcracker adventure...
My sisters Ronda and Deena.  We went to the Adler Theater to see Mama Mia!! ( A Christmas gift from Deena's children)
My best picture of me and John -- Christmas 2013.
The dress started with a t-shirt of dancing flamingos...
I cut the shirt off and added a pink band (with elastic inside) to make an empire waist effect.
Some signature t-shirt fringe...
At the bottom of the skirt -- there is a reindeer running on a treadmill. (the words say Healthy Holiday)
I slapped this piece of pink over a mistake...
We actually INVITED OUR HUSBANDS to our Book Club Christmas party! We did a potluck dinner at Linda P's house. Sandy, Linda P, me and Linda K. Another fun occasion to wear my 2013 Christmas dress!!

When I stop to think about it (which this blog often makes me do) -- I need to thank my book clubbers for inspiring me to MAKE a Christmas dress in the first place. Last year, it was Sandy's idea to have a "couples" Christmas party. (As you know -- the whole point of a once a week book club is to NOT include the husbands.) On the day of the party -- at the last minute, I cut up some old Christmas t-shirts and made a maxi-dress. They were so complimentary and it was so much fun to wear -- I was inspired to make FOUR of them for the 2013 Sew Expo. Long t-shirt dresses with pithy sayings became my sewing passion. SO THANKS AGAIN, GIRLS..!!

The question is -- how many people do you have in your life who applaud just about anything you do?

So -- hey -- if your friends aren't your best cheerleaders -- you need to reassess.

Arctic Carseat Blanket #3

WOW...this is so much fun!!  This is my THIRD carseat blanket...and it is sooo special....I loved making it.  But now I'm officially done.  I am moving on...

This creation happened because last week, while digging on t-shirt mountain, I found a Jones of New York velvet winter coat with a wonderful metal zipper...and a beautiful fur collar. I have no idea why I bought it -- but the price tag was $3.45.
Sorry for the terrible picture -- but note the beautiful zippered pockets, too....

AND IT WILL BE A FABULOUS arctic carseat blanket. The zipper is genius!!

All I have to do is cut off the sleeves. But, at this point, I made a mistake. I pinned the sleeves shut, then I stitched a straight line and cut the sleeve off. Which left exposed raw edges on the outside. It would have been a lot easier if I'd pulled the sleeve inside the jacket and THEN sewed...
So you can learn that lesson from my mistake...

I love the fur collar -- the label says Jones of New York...
This is the t-shirt I'll use to make the new, much thinner back...
After I cut out the original back of the coat -- here's the new t-shirt back.  You can see how the slits work...You can also see those raw edges I had to deal with...
I used two layes of t-shirts for the new back.  The outside is pink striped, the inside has these words...
When you lay the blanket in the carseat -- the harness pulls through the slits...
So the baby is COMPLETELY HARNESSED UP....
And, at that point -- you just zip up the coat!!
To make the slits -- I just did a straight stretch stitch in a box around the line.  Then I cut it open.  DUH!  It's t-shirt fabric -- it is very stretchy, and it's not going to fray.  LOTS of advantages...
After Warren tried on the blanket -- I decided it needed a little pink velour hood.  I cut up a little jacket from the mountain.
When it was time to make the fold-up piece, I used the black velvet sleeve for one side -- and two layers of a cashmere sweater for the other side...
Yes, I know what you're thinking -- THIS RECYCLING THING IS A LOT MORE WORK THAN JUST CUTTING A PATTERN OUT OF NEW FARIC.

Hey -- YOU'RE TELLING ME??   But where's the sport in that??

One day soon, I hope to have a picture of the adorable baby girl who will be using her new black velvet carseat blanket.  Ross put her picture on our refrigerator several months ago.  She is the third daughter for his high school friend, Lisa....SUCH A CUTIE...

Customized Flannel-lined Jeans

We heat our home with a wood burning furnace. At this point in the winter -- we can't remember why.

John's summer hobby is golf -- and in the winter, he cuts wood. This year -- his hobby has turned into a full time job. Which is more like a survival contest, really...This winter has been so bitter cold -- John spends many hours working with wood -- just to keep the house warm.

The muck boots he had been using created a problem because the boot top rubbed so hard against his skin -- he had bloody shins. Of course, his legs were so frozen, he didn't feel anything...Ugh...

So-- John got a new pair of boots with much softer tops. AND they're rated to 40 BELOW zero.

When it's this cold, he likes flannel-lined jeans....but the legs are too thick to tuck into his new boots.

NOT TO WORRY -- I CAN SEW...
The first step was to cut off the legs of his flannel-lined jeans...
The new skinny legs are actually two layers...one flannel and another black polar fleece...
And this was important -- I sewed the new leg bottom WRONG sides together - so John wouldn't feel a seam.
